Welcome!

Paula Deen has a lesson to teach us – it’s just not the one she’s promoting!

Paula Deen, a chef with her own cooking show has now come forward with her Type 2 diabetes diagnosis, only after she secured a spokeswoman position with one of the drug manufacturers who profit from this disease.  Paula has been dishing up HUGH portions of southern cooking for years.  She loves butter, she loves deep fried anything and she loves desserts (with all the white sugar, white flour and lard).  I’ll have to give her credit – she obviously eats what she teaches!

The lesson she wants you to learn is to “eat these foods in moderation.”  And the lesson she’s also promoting, but not saying is, and accept your NEW diabetic life by consuming prescription medications!   It’s almost as if she’s advocating a diabetic lifestyle with full acceptance of this horrible disease.  The saddest part of all of this, is she’s using her celebrity to continue to promote her unhealthy cooking on one hand, and advocating a lifetime of pharmaceutical medications on the other!

What an opportunity lost!  Just imagine another path for dear Paula.  One where she would have come out immediately about her diagnosis – she’s known about it for  3 YEARS!  Acknowledging  that her food choices and lack of exercise were major contributors to her new health crises.  And then, she revisits the message on her show.  She decides to focus on a message about making Southern cooking healthy.  She could have pioneered NEW ways to give us comfort foods.  She could have even invited physicians, energy workers from the south, alternative health practitioners to all share what their doing to modify their traditional southern favorite recipes.  Sadly, this path was not taken.

The most important lesson she could have taught was – Type 2 diabetes can be overcome!  People who eat lots of fresh veggies, fruits, plenty of greens(cooked or RAW), whole grains, nuts and seeds and the right kinds of fats don’t get Type 2 diabetes.  What a shame that Paula is using her fame to save her career.  Because surely, without the “spin” she’s putting on her lifestyle, it would be hard to peddle lard, white flour and white sugar  and maintain any credibility.

My hope is that most people will see the duplicity that benefits only Paula and the new pharmaceutical company who has paid her for her endorsement.   When people say and do something that you can feel is “disconnected” from the truth – it’s time to change the channel and pick up a good book.  Like IN DEFENSE OF FOOD by Michael Pollan.

Mike finishes his juice fast with great results!

Mike finished the 10 day juice fast with fantastic weight loss and more importantly, he just feels great!  He admitted on the last day that he was tired of drinking just juice and soooo ready for some real food.

I made him a fruit salad consisting of fresh pineapple, raspberries and blueberries to ease back into a whole food diet.    What has been most interesting to me has been his mood.  He just seems calmer.  Almost introspective.  Anyone who knows my husband, knows that he is talkative, lively and super energetic.  This calmer person living with me for the last few days has been very uncharacteristic.  But, then I remember that he’s not drinking coffee and the lack of food brings on it’s own malaise.  I imagine his adrenal glands and brain chemistry loving the “vacation” from all of the stimulation they get in a typical day with him.   The “clearer mind” he mentions, when asked how he’s feeling, is a great unexpected by-product of this juice fast.  I can imagine both of us juicing more and incorporating a fast every other month for a few days.  It was a great experiment in mental willpower and I can see the renewed dedication he has to his health!

Mike’s Juice Fast Continues!!!

The weekend was especially difficult for Mike. We’re used to going out to eat at least once during the weekend. We’re also used to uncorking a bottle of wine on a Friday night to unwind from the week and enjoy each other’s company. But, all of our routines were put on hold because of the juice fast. To say he was in a bad mood would put it mildly. He had great energy in the mornings and then by mid-afternoon he was grumpy! I am so proud of him because I know what a huge change this is for him. He’s breaking all kinds of habits and really taking a huge step to optimize his health this year!!

My husband does a 10 Day Juice Fast

After watching the movie FAT, SICK AND NEARLY DEAD we were both motivated to juice. We had already talked about the “rut” we felt we were in with our diet. I had begun eating more cooked foods and adding in wine every night. It’s football season with the Packers winning so that equals more beer in Mike’s life. We knew that a juice fast would begin cleaning us out – and change our tastebuds. My juice fast lasted 36 hours, and Mike is going for 10 days. I researched several juice books to come up with a DAY OF JUICING along with a fast. I wanted the emphasis to be on detoxification, as well as helping the liver rejuvenate for both of us. I decided to use apples in several of the recipes for the fructose element. The reason behind that decision was to help the brain stay alert versus sluggish. I knew Mike would still need to conduct business as staying home from work was not going to happen during this cleanse. The fructose converts to glucose in the body and contributes to energy. We start off with a very green drink in the morning. Had my Grapefruit/Chia Seed Fresca with Lemon essential oil for a morning snack. Then there is a hearty lunch juice, a sweet afternoon juice(again to boost energy) and then another dinner juice. He does not consume anything past 6PM to facilitate the fast. allowing the body to heal. We also drink a highly concentrated chlorophyllin drink called Liv Sxinney, which also suppresses appetite naturally without a stimulant.
Here’s the
Get Up & GO Juice Recipe:
3 Kale leaves
1 apple
1 lemon, skin removed
4-5 celery stalks
1 small cucumber, leave the skin on
2 inches of ginger

I’ll be pulling all other recipes together, along with a consumable essential oil, chia seeds and a bag of the Liv Sxinney to offer for anyone who wants to try this fast for themselves. You can find out more about Liv Sxinney (a chlorophyll drink with plant based minerals and a appetite suppressant) at my website: www.livonline.net/joline
